Course Outline: Designated Safeguarding Lead Training Course
The Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) or Designated Safeguarding Officer is the person responsible for safeguarding issues within a school or college. Staff, volunteers and family members will take their concerns to the DSL as their first point of contact, so it’s vital that DSLs have a good understanding of child safeguarding legislation and procedures.
Caredemy’s Designated Safeguarding Lead Training online course will give you the skills and knowledge you’ll need to be able to develop, manage and review child safeguarding at your school or college.
It will support your understanding of your role and safeguarding responsibilities as a Designated Safeguarding Officer so that you can feel confident in your duty of care to children and young people.
What is a Designated Safeguarding Lead?
A Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) is the person who has overall responsibility for child safeguarding in a school. They must be a senior member of staff and their role as the DSL must be included in their job description.
Staff must be able to discuss any safeguarding concerns with the DSL or their deputy/deputies, so it’s important that they are always available during school hours.
All educational settings need to ensure that they have an appropriate safeguarding policy in place which includes a commitment to safeguarding training. Designated Safeguarding Officers and their deputies must receive specific safeguarding training that is appropriate to their role and refresher training should be carried out at least every two years.
Who is the Designated Safeguarding Lead Training course suitable for?
This Designated Safeguarding Lead course is specifically designed to meet the training requirements of Designated Safeguarding Officers. It is also suitable for anyone who wants to learn about the responsibilities and role of the Designated Safeguarding Lead, to allow them to either assist a DSL or become one in the future.
The Designated Safeguarding Lead online training course is suitable for use in an induction training syllabus for newly appointed DSLs and their deputies. It can also be used as part of Designated Safeguarding Lead refresher training.
This is a Level 1 course which is suitable for all learners. However we recommend that you should have some prior knowledge of safeguarding before you undertake this course. If you haven’t received any prior safeguarding training, we would recommend taking our Safeguarding Children in Education and Safeguarding Children with Disabilities online courses first.
What does the course cover?
The Designated Safeguarding Officer training course will help you to understand the responsibilities of the DSL role and the safeguarding structure in schools and colleges. You will learn how to recognise and respond to concerns about abuse appropriately and safely, as well as studying the current safeguarding policies, law and guidance.
Keeping the child as the central focus is key to good child safeguarding, and you will learn how to ensure that a child’s disclosures are handled with sensitivity.
The syllabus is designed to help you feel confident in your ability to recognise the support that a child needs, from Early Help Assessments through to reporting concerns to social care. You will also learn the importance of staying involved in a process after making a referral, how to record and share information, and how to take action if you disagree with the decisions made.
This is a CPD accredited course which will take around three hours to complete and 3 CPD points will be awarded when you successfully complete the course.
